In May 2018 the International Tennis Federation (ITF) has reported an anti-doping rule violation against the Brazilian tennis player Ribeiro Marcondes after his A and B samples - collected in March and April 2018 - tested positive for the prohibited substance Hydrochlorothiazide.
After notification the Athlete gave a prompt admission, denied the intentional use of the substance, waived his right for a hearing, accepted the provisional suspension and the sanction proposed by the ITF.
The Athlete explained with evidence that he had used prescribed medication which he mentioned at the Doping Control Form. Analysis of his medication in the Montreal Lab confirmed that it contained the prohibited substance with levels of contamination to be consistent with the concentrations found in the Athlete’s samples.
The ITF accepts that the violation was not intentional and that the Athlete established how the substance entered his system. The ITF deems that the Athlete’s degree of fault was not significant and considers his cooperation in this case for imposing a reduced sanction.
Therefore on 11 September 2018 the ITF decides to impose a 9 month perod of ineligibility on the Athlete starting on the date of the sample collection, i.e. on 8 March 2018.
