On 11 October 2019 the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) decided to disqualify the Brazillian Athlete Andressa de Morais after her sample tested positive for the prohibited substance Enobosarm (ostarine). Hereafter the case was referred to World Athletics.
After notification in August 2019 by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) of World Athletics the Athlete gave a prompt admission, waived her right for a hearing, accepted a provisional suspension and the sanction proposed by AIU.
The Athlete denied the intentional use of Enobosarm and explained that she had used prescribed supplements that were contaminated in the compounding pharmacy in Brazil that had produced these prescribed supplemens. The Athlete asserted that the pharmacy was ISO-accredited and had never been involved in any contamination case.
Analysis of the Athlete's supplements in the Laboratory revealed the presence of the prohibited substance Enobosarm at different concentrations. Further the Compound Pharmacy in question confirmed that previously Enobosarm had been used in the production of other products on the same day that the Athlete's prescribed products were produced.
Due to the proliferation of doping cases involving compound pharmacies in Brazil the AIU concludes that the Athlete could have known, and after specific notice of the significant risk, that supplements / products prepared by compound pharmacies in Brazil may contain prohibited substances not listed as ingredients.
The AIU holds that the Athlete gave a prompt admission, accepts that the violation was not intentional and the result of contaminated supplements she had used. Considering the circumstances in this case the AIU determines that the Athlete's subjective level of Fault is within the lower region of the significant / considerable degree of Fault.
Therefore the AIU decides on 4 December 2020 to impose a 16 month period of ineligiblity on the Athlete starting on the date of the sample collection, i.e. on 6 August 2019.
