The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has reported an anti-doping rule violation against the Player in July 2009 after her A and B samples tested positive for the prohibited substances fenproporex and amphetamines.
After a period of deliberations with the Portuguese National Anti-Doping Agency and the Cape Verde Olympic Committee, the FIBA referred the case to its Disciplinary Panel on 23 March 2010.
After notification the Player failed to be heard for the Panel but filed a post-hearing statement in her defence.
The Player stated she had used a “over the counter” supplement purchased in Portugal. The Player argued this supplement must have been the source of the prohibited substance.
The Panel has serious doubts about Player’s statement and she failed to provide any scientific evidence in support of her argument.
The Panel finds the Player acted negligently without ensuring that the supplement does not contain a prohibited substance. Therefore the FIBA Disciplinary Panel decides a 2 year period of ineligibility starting from the date of her last game, i.e. 18 July 2009.
