In November 2010 the National Anti-Doping Organisation Flanders (NADO Flanders) has reported an anti-doping rule violation against the Player after her sample tested positive for the prohibited substance morphine. The laboratory reported a low concentration of morphine in the sample. On 3 May 2011 after a hearing the NADO Flanders Disciplinary Commission concluded the Player had used a not prohibited codeine medication. Therefore the Disciplinary Commission acquitted the Player.
After a period of delays and deliberations with NADO Flanders, the FIBA notified the Player for a hearing. Hereafter the Player filed statements and evidence in her defence and was heard for the FIBA Disciplinary Panel.
The Player stated she had used prescribed codeine medication one day before the doping control and also consumed bagels and cakes with poppy seed the morning of the doping control.
The Panel concludes that it is more probable than not that morphine entered Player’s body through the consumption of bagels and cakes with poppy seed.
Considering Player’s statement, the circumstances and without intention to enhance performance the FIBA Disciplinary Panel decides a 6 month period of ineligibility starting from Player’s last game, i.e. from 18 July 2011.
