Chronic Users of Supraphysiological Doses of Anabolic Androgenic Steroids Develop Hematological and Serum Lipoprotein Profiles That Are Characteristic of High Cardiovascular Risk / Alex Souto Maior, Carlos Belchior, Rogério Costa Sanches, Tiago Oliveira da Silva, Tomás Leonelli, Paulo Adriano Schwingel, Roberto Simão, Moacir Marocolo, José Hamilton Matheus Nascimento. - (International Journal of Sport and Exercise Science 3 (2011) 2 (July 1); p. 27-36)

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of long-term anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) use on the hematological and lipoprotein profile of young men practicing sports at fitness centers. Twenty-two male subjects were divided in two groups: AAS (n = 11; 27.3 ± 4.5 years; 85.1 ± 6.8 kg; 174 ± 5.5 cm) and control (n = 11; 24.7 ± 3.6 years; 81.7 ± 7.6 kg; 178.5 ± 6.5 cm). The hemodynamic response, metabolic profile (blood glucose and lactate) and serum lipoprotein levels were measured prior to, during, and after a submaximal exercise test on a cycloergometer. Blood samples were obtained before the exercise test to determine the hematological profile (white and red cells). The hemodynamic response showed no statistically difference between groups before, during, or after submaximal exercise test. Hemoglobin, hematocrit, erythrocytes, leucocytes and monocytes were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in AAS users compared to control subjects. HDL-cholesterol level was significantly lower, whereas triglycerides levels, LDL-cholesterol level and the LDL-c/HDL-c ratio were significantly higher in the AAS group. Blood glucose and lactate levels were significantly higher in the AAS users after submaximal exercise test. In conclusion, young men practicing sports at fitness centers who are AAS users exhibit proatherogenic and prothrombotic profile, and premature metabolic disturb in despite of regular physical activity.

SAIDS 2011_12 SAIDS vs James Best

1 Jul 2011

In March 2011 the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) has reported an anti-doping rule violation against the Athlete James Best after his sample tested positive for the prohibited substances methylhexaneamine, 19-norandrosterone and 19-norticholanolon, metabolites of nandrolone. After notification the Athlete filed a statement in his defence and was heard for the SAIDS Disciplinary Committee.

The Athlete admitted the use of methylhexaneamine and the injecting of Deca 300 (Nandrolone), not to enhance his sports performance but to deal with his lack of energy and his persistent knee injury.
At the hearing the Athlete did not mention the name of the person who had illegally injectied him.

The Committee considered aggravating circumstances in this case due to his unsatisfactory and uncorroborated explanations and through the Athlete having two prohibited substances in his system.
Also the Athlete failed to provide SAIDS with substantial assistance towards discovering or establishing anti-doping rule violations in the sport of triathlon.
Therefore the SAIDS Disciplinary Committee decides to impose a 3 year period of ineligibility on the Athlete.

IRB 2011 IRB vs Martin Nuñez Lasalle

1 Jul 2011

Facts
The International Rugby Board (IRB) alleges Martin Nuñez Lasalle (the player) for a violation of the Anti-Doping Rules. On 4 December 2010, while playing for the Argentina team in the World Sevens Series Tournament in Dubai, the Player underwent in-competition drug testing. The sample of the urine specimen which the Player provided was positive for the prohibited substance, 19-Norandrosterone a metabolite of nandrolone at a concentration of 14 ng/ml.

History
The player suffered from a shoulder injury, for the treatment he used a number of drugs – dexametasone, meprednisone, deca-durobolin and amitriptiline. Deca-Durabolin labels and containers clearly refer to Nandrolone.

Decision
On 4 December 2010, the Player committed an anti-doping rule violation. The sanction imposed for this anti-doping rule violation is a period of Ineligibility of 15 months, commencing on 23 December 2010 (the date upon which the Player was notified of the adverse analytical finding and provisionally suspended) and concluding (but inclusive of) 22 March 2012.

FIBA 2011 FIBA vs Dragoslav Papic

1 Jul 2011

In April 2011 the Cyprus Anti-Doping Authority has reported an anti-doping rule violation against the Player after his sample tested positive for the prohibited substances carboxy THC (cannabis) and the metabolites benzoylecgonine and methylecgonine (cocaine).
Therefore on 1 July 2011 Košarkaški Savez Srbije (KSS), the Serbian Basketball Federation, decides to impose a 2 year period of ineligibility on the Player. Hereafter the FIBA adopts the Serbian decision.

Abstract

The present study was performed to investigate the influence of the intake of selective oestrogen receptor modulators on the urinary endogenous steroids profile. For this purpose the circadian variability of luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, testosterone, 5α-androstan-3α,17β-diol, 5β-androstan-3α,17β-diol, epitestosterone, 4-androstenedione, androsterone and etiocholanolone were measured on eight subjects (four males and four females) by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and chemiluminescent immunometric assay techniques before and after oral administration of multiple doses of either tamoxifen (80 mg for 2 days) or toremifene (120 mg for 2 days) or clomiphene (100 mg for 2 days). The individual baseline variability of the steroids studied was set up by collecting the urine samples every 3 h, for 3 days prior to the treatment; whereas the evaluation of the effects of the oral administration of multiple doses of selective oestrogen receptor modulators on the steroid urinary profile was assessed by collecting urine samples every three hours for at least five days from the first administration.

The results of our measurements showed that, only in male subjects, the relative urinary concentrations of testosterone, epitestosterone and 4-androstenedione were significantly altered generally after the second day of drug administration. While no significant effects were recorded in both sexes on the luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, androsterone, etiocholanolone, 5α-androstan-3α,17β-diol and 5β-androstan-3α,17β-diol urinary levels and on testosterone/epitestosterone, 5α-androstan-3α,17β-diol/5β-androstan-3α,17β-diol and androsterone/etiocholanolone ratios.

AFLD 2011 FFM vs Respondent M64

30 Jun 2011

Facts
The French Motorycling Federation (Fédération Française de motocyclisme, FFM) charges respondent M64 for a violation of the Anti-Doping Rules. During a motorcycling event on September 12, 2010, a sample was taken for doping control purposes. The analysis of the sample showed the presence of a metabolite of tetrahydrocannabinol, the active ingredient of cannabis. Cannabis is a prohibited substance on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prohibited list and is regarded as a specified substance.

History
The respondent had used cannabis the night before the doping test. There was no intention to enhance sport performances. Regarding his age there is no reason for the use of doping. However the use of cannabis in motor sports creates a dangerous situation for the driver and the crowd.

Decision
1. The sanction is a period of ineligibility of nine months in which in the respondent can't take part in competitions and manifestations organized or authorized by the FFM.
2. The period of ineligibility will be reduced with the period already served in by the decision (three months period of ineligibility), dated December 3, 2010, of the disciplinary committee of the FFM.
3. The decision, dated December 3, 2010, of the disciplinary committee of the FFM will be modified.
4. The decision starts on the date of notification.
5. The decision will be published and sent to the parties involved.
